Overview

Artuor app is an art guide that maps out gallery openings and art exhibitions in Tel Aviv. It lists all art exhibitions currently on view, provides exhibition information, and allows users to map a route for the exhibitions they wish to visit. The information shown on the app includes exhibition dates, gallery locations, hours of operation and contact information, as well as press releases and high-quality images of selected works, giving users a preview of the art on view.

Context

Tel Aviv is a tiny city compared to other culture capitals around the world, but it has a vibrant and diverse art scene. There are more than 80 galleries and exhibition spaces throughout the city showing work of local and international artists. Every week there are new shows opening and others closing, and there’s no single, easy platform for the art connoisseur to keep track of what is showing where and when.

Target Audience

Artour is designed for art enthusiasts who want to engage in the Tel Aviv art scene, weather they are locals or tourists.

App Goals

  • Provide the user with an easy way to find contemporary art exhibitions, current and upcoming.

  • Allow the user to track openings, popular and unmissable shows and shows that are closing soon.

  • Allow the user to view preview images, read press releases and always have accurate and up-to-date exhibition information handy.

  • Make it easier for the user to plan ahead and to navigate galleries with a map of all current shows, or with a custom map of the user’s picks.

Research

I researched two competitor apps (Exhibitionary and See Saw) and conducted interviews with See Saw users. My goal was to get insight on content hierarchy, display methods, included features and locate any friction points that I want to avoid.

Major Research Findings:

  • Features to keep: My Picks, Featured exhibitions, Opening exhibitions, list view & map view

  • Features to add: closing exhibitions, a history of all exhibitions added to My Picks

  • Features to lose: social functions, Alerts (should be integrated into user settings)

  • Adding closing dates to Current exhibitions

  • Google Maps integration

User Experience

  • Simple and intuitive interface that could cater to a wide variety of users and make the app easy to use on the go.

  • The main focus is the art and providing the user with all the information about the exhibitions and venues.

  • Easy navigation between the full list of shows and the user’s picks.

  • User Flow

Design Concept

I wanted the interface design to resemble a gallery space - clean and minimal so that the art is the main visual focus, while the space around it is designed to not distract the viewer/user from it or interfere with it (a gallery design standard known as “White Cube”)

Color and Style

A minimal pallet of black, white and grey, and a clean, simple font.
